Khadija Benis is an MIT Portugal PhD Candidate in Sustainable Energy Systems at Instituto Superior Técnico. At the moment she is studying the metabolism of an urban area located in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon. Her doctorate aims to develop a BIM-enabled Building Metabolism Simulator (BMS) —a decision-making support tool that integrates an array of building-integrated “green” technologies, which implementation has an effect on the metabolism of the building through its lifespan, measured in terms of CO2 emissions reduction. Its integration into BIM environments will enable designers to test one technology against another in various carbon neutrality scenarios, in any kind of project, as soon as early design stages on BIM.
